West Side Bazaar – Buffalo NY
This Buffalo, NY small restaurant business incubator spotlights new and diverse culinary options
Two of Buffalo, NY’s most significant food incubators are the West Side Bazaar (shown) and Downtown Bazaar, the former currently housing small Congolese, Egyptian, Jamaican, Korean, Laotian (bubble tea), and Malaysian restaurants, with the latter hosting Burmese/Thai, Ethiopian, Filipino, Mexican, and Senegalese options. The newer West Side Bazaar space on Niagara Street impressively replaces the smaller original location on Grant, which was damaged by fire, dislocating the prior crop of restaurateurs.
Malkia & Co.’s outstanding service and unique African dishes (beef brochettes, chicken with peanut sauce) were accompanied by more familiar options (crab cakes, tiramisu), while Chef BigWayne’s Jamaican delivered moist jerk chicken (shown) and large beef patties.
Our favorite WSB spot overall was Phyu Thien Malaysian, which sells bowls of creamy Laksa coconut noodle soup, some of the best curried Mee Goreng noodles we’ve found in the U.S., Kurabu Mangga (thin shredded mango salad), wide/flat Char Kway Teow noodles, plus dumplings and extra-large steamed buns. Tasty teas and coffees, notably including Lao iced coffee, can be found at the affordable Bubble Tea and Smoothie Bar up front. This Bazaar is definitely worth checking out on any visit to Buffalo.
