Vientiane Lao Thai

Garden Grove is the place to visit for some of OC's best Laotian food, including unique dishes

If you’re interested in exploring Laotian cuisine in Orange County, there aren’t many choices, and Vientiane has long been considered the best of them. While the number has grown healthily in recent years, including super compelling but smaller restaurants Kra Z Kai’s Laotian BBQ and Nok’s Kitchen, Vientiane has a larger menu with more options to explore, as well as a much larger dining room to accommodate families.

Though Vientiane offers dishes from Laos and Thailand, the Lao dishes are both harder to find around here, and include some real rarities. Beyond Lao sausage, which is perhaps the most common Lao dish locally, Vientiane offers Lao-style fresh sliced catfish salad, Lao takes on curry and pho soups, raw butterflied shrimp with a spicy dip, and pan-fried noodles are available.

We tried the deep fried Lao Sausage with a spicy, sour dip, a seemingly endless bowl of Kao Poon curry noodle soup, fried catfish, a pan fried rice noodle dish called Khua Mee Lao, and fried short ribs. Everything we tried was good, umami-rich in flavor, and a good value for the price, with matter-of-fact but clean plating. This isn’t a fancy restaurant – more middle of the road in presentation and portions – and the prices ($15-18 for salads, $15-21 for soups, $14-17 for noodles, $17-26 for seafood) reflect that, as well.

Vientiane was a legitimately fun experience thanks to the unique menu, consistently good dishes, and nice service. We’re looking forward to returning again.
