Uncle Fung Borneo Eatery

A small LA-based Indonesian chain exits Orange County, keeps Long Beach location

Indonesian, Malaysian and Singaporean restaurants are hard to find in Orange County, and really good ones are even rarer. Originally from LA with several locations in LA and Orange Counties, Buena Park’s Uncle Fung Borneo Eatery was the closest to great one could come without driving to and through Los Angeles.

Their generally excellent chicken sate has the characteristic char and earthy soy-peanut sauce you’d expect from a street stall in Singapore, and is worth ordering for certain, especially if you haven’t had that style of sate before. Similarly, roti prata bread/pancakes are textbook, served with a light curry dip on the side.

Kari penyet combines a Javanese-style fried cornish hen – not particularly memorable in any way – with a bowl-sized portion of rice (curry, coconut, or white as you prefer) and sambal for mixing or dipping. A hearty, nicely loaded Singapore fried rice includes shrimp, char siu pork, and slices of fish cake, in addition to scallions, egg, and cabbage. Similar pork and fish cake top homemade egg noodles in the Hakka Mie, served dry with broth on the side.

We visited Uncle Fung’s Buena Park and Long Beach locations, and found the vibe consistently low-key – quiet, unassuming, and fairly affordable by today’s standards. The emphasis was mostly on serving food, with minimal ambience or plating, but if you’re looking to satisfy a craving for one of these cuisines, they would scratch the itch.

Unfortunately, the Buena Park location of Uncle Fung’s closed in 2024, leaving the Long Beach location – and its sister restaurant, Borneo Eatery in Los Angeles – as alternatives.
