Three Roots Mexican Cocina

Hailed for its Taco Tuesday specials, this two-location restaurant quickly faded from Irvine

With two locations – the original in Irvine, with a second in Santa Ana – Three Roots Mexican Cocina served generally authentic Mexican food from shopping center locations since 2021. Occupying a somewhat hidden space in Irvine’s Culver Plaza, the first location appeared in February 2021 and became known for its affordable Taco Tuesday menu, shown here with grilled chicken, carnitas, pastor, birria, asada, and shrimp tacos, plus shrimp ceviche.

Three Roots atypically served duros (also known as chicharrones de harina) instead of corn chips as a complementary snack with meals. Service at the Irvine location was pleasant and attentive.

At the end of 2021, a second location opened at the Main Place Mall in Santa Ana, taking over a former Olive Garden. Initially impressive, the overly large location fell into disrepair, and with ongoing staffing issues, appeared to be headed for closure. The smaller Irvine location closed in 2022, citing an inability to continue in that location, and was replaced by the Chinese hot pot restaurant Nice to Meet You.
