The Square – Washington DC

In Washington DC, a mercado-inspired food hall with Spanish and non-Spanish tenants

Opened in fall 2023 by ThinkFoodGroup/José Andrés Group alums Ruben Garcia (formerly of minibar by José Andrés and el Bulli) and Richie Brandenburg (of the Beverly Hills Bazaar by José Andrés and DC’s Union Market food hall), Washington DC’s The Square is a chef-driven food hall inspired by Spanish mercados, somewhat similar to Andrés’ Mercado Little Spain in New York City. Anchored by Garcia’s full-service Spanish tapas restaurant Casa Teresa, The Square offers sushi, pizza, tacos, and fried chicken at separate stalls, along with coffee and cocktail bars.

The Square also hosts multiple additional Spanish spaces dedicated to tapas (“Tapas by Casa Teresa”), bikini sandwiches and ham (under the great name “Jamón Jamón”), grilled meats (at “Brasa”), and pastries (including churros and catalan cream-filled croissants called xuxos, at “Jurges”) – separation that will challenge anyone hoping to sample all of the hall’s Spanish treats from a single menu or table. In addition to the individual spaces, an extra-large TV was playing soccer matches for a bar crowd during our visit.
