The Original Farmers Market – Los Angeles

One of Los Angeles's historic food destinations is this sprawling 90-year-old collection of small vendors

Immediately next to The Grove shopping center in Los Angeles, the Original Farmers Market is a famous 90-year-old collection of over 100 vendors spanning produce and nut vendors, counter and table service restaurants, bookstores, and more. Primarily focused on foods and drinks, with most vendors offering prepared items rather than raw ingredients, the bustling Market has long been a major meeting location for Angelenos, and a great place to find all sorts of different cuisines within walking distance of one another.

Note that a given cuisine’s or individual food’s availability doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s particularly great or special here – just that it can be found in some way. We often arrive intending to check out a restaurant and wind up at least as excited by something new or interesting at the Taschen bookstore.

Across many years and multiple visits to the Farmers Market, we’ve sampled everything from Singaporean food to Mexican, American, and Brazilian items, as well as candied nuts, cheeses, fruits and vegetables, sandwiches, and pizza. The collection is so large that groups of friends or family visiting together may struggle to find common seating after spreading out to find individually appealing desginations, though there are tables and chains spread throughout the facility.

Parking can be a challenge during the Market’s peak hours, so if you’re planning to meet someone at 3rd and Fairfax, you may want to give yourself a little extra time.
