Varying dramatically from fascinating to simply thought-provoking depending on the current exhibitions, the Hammer is a modern art museum affiliated with UCLA and located in Westwood Village, Los Angeles. In addition to a small permanent collection of mostly 19th and 20th century art from Europe and the United States, the Hammer offers up to four rotating exhibitions at once that largely but not exclusively focus on contemporary art, including social justice projects, augmented reality displays, varied explorations of the human form, and traditional crafts such as printmaking. At its best, the Hammer provides several hours worth of mind-melting exploration, though we’ve frequently found multiple galleries under extended reconfiguration on our visits.
Admission is free, as is parking for a limited period. A restaurant and gift shop (featuring numerous cookbooks) are also on the premises.
