The Getty Center

An art museum at least as amazing architecturally as the exhibits inside

Certainly one of the most impressive art galleries in Southern California, the Getty Center was built starting in the late 1980s and opened at the end of 1997 – a multi-building complex with numerous exhibition spaces, as well as elaborate gardens and a beautiful campus. In addition to permanent collections of classical art and antiquities, including substantial European sculpture galleries, religious art, and French royal decor, the Getty hosts rotating exhibitions of contemporary photography and art; it’s easily worth several hours of exploration.

The Getty Center overlooks Los Angeles from a mountain range, and has its own cafes and multiple gift stores. Admission is free with paid parking; a tram takes guests from the parking garage to the Center’s collection of buildings.
