The Broad

A spectacular and substantially free contemporary art gallery in downtown Los Angeles

Pound for pound our favorite gallery in Los Angeles, The Broad is a contemporary art museum with an impressive collection of works from the last 50 years, including Andy Warhol, Yayoi Kusama, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring, Roy Lichtenstein, Jeff Koons, and many others. Two of Kusama’s famous reflecting infinity mirror exhibits are open to public viewing – one with advance reservations – and though both of them and the gallery’s main exhibition areas are free of charge, special rotating exhibitions and on-site parking are available for small fees.

The Broad’s building is architecturally stunning, with a distinctive pattern interrupted by a second-floor oculus (eye) that peers out of one side towards the street. A superb first floor gift shop near the exits has included souvenirs from the gallery’s permanent artists, as well as Takashi Murakami, whose work is sometimes featured in rotating exhibitions here. Architecturally significant sites including The Grand LA (home to San Laurel and Agua Viva), the Walt Disney Concert Hall, and the Museum of Contemporary Art (downtown) are only steps away from The Broad’s entrance.
