The Alley

Now internationally famous, this Taiwanese tea shop brand has two locations in Orange County

Originating in Taiwan before establishing its first U.S. locations in Rowland Heights and Fountain Valley, The Alley is one of now countless boba tea shops in Orange County, largely distinguished by its branding. With a Harry Potter-inspired deer logo and “deerioca” (tapioca ball) milk teas, The Alley became internationally famous for its aesthetics after launching, and currently operates around 400 stores worldwide, many spread across Asia.

Sugary, substantial drinks are The Alley’s big draw. They make dark sugar cane syrups and boba balls in house, though their transparent cups don’t have the distinctive dark tiger stripes of rivals such as Tiger Sugar. Instead, in their signature “brown sugar deerioca creme brûlée milk” drink, your eye will be drawn to add-ins such as actual creme brûlée, which floats above the boba, turning the drink into a delicious but high-calorie dessert.

Other drinks omit the creme brulee in favor of layered cream, and swap the brown sugar emphasis for matcha, ube, cocoa, milk tea, or fruit tea. As the peach oolong shown here suggests, they’re good, but rarely as distinctive as the creme brûlée version, and tend to be pretty easy to finish thanks to copious ice. Fruit coffee mixes, including mango, peach-lychee, or passion fruit-pineapple, recently introduced new flavors that you won’t find everywhere.

We’ve mostly visited the Fountain Valley location, which tends to have dispassionate service and fairly long drink wait times, with an interior design that feels more like a modern design statement than a comfortable place to hang out. A newer location at the Irvine Spectrum tends to fill orders faster, and provides less incentive to stick around. We recommend trying one, particularly for the brown sugar drinks as desserts, at least once.
