Tan Hong Mai

A long-standing but small Vietnamese restaurant in Little Saigon, Tan Hong Mai was one of a small number of local restaurants specializing in banh uot, steamed rice paper sheets that are delivered on a plate with other ingredients – nem sausage, herbs, vegetables, fishcake, and deep fried items – then used to create small hand rollls. Our photos show a representative plate of banh uot, as well as crispy egg rolls.

The menu also included lot leaf-wrapped beef, bun vermicelli, and banh mi sandwiches. Service and atmosphere were well above average on our visit.

Tan Hong Mai closed in 2021 after two decades. Other specialists in Little Saigon that offer banh uot (and pre-made rolls, known as banh cuon) include Banh Cuon Thanh Tri and Banh Cuon Luu Luyen.
