Tan Cang Newport Seafood

Home to the Newport Style Gigantic Lobster, an Orange County must-try dish

Although many restaurants offer variations on Tan Cang’s most famous dish – alternately known as the Newport Special Lobster or Newport Style Gigantic Lobster – there’s no better place to experience it than here, which despite the “Newport” name is located in Santa Ana. The scallion- and garlic-heavy noodle and seafood dish is at once phenomenally flavored, overflowing, and expensive, earning its reputation through a combination of spectacle and decadent pricing. Huge chunks of lobster meat arrive bolted to shells, so expect to use both fingers and chopsticks here.

Be warned in advance that Tan Cang only serves monster-sized lobsters, which is to say 4.5 lbs. and up, which is more than one person can safely eat. So we recommend coming here with family and/or friends, especially ones who will rejoice in rather than complain about the dish’s sloppiness.

Other menu items are pretty good, notably including a Vietnamese/French-style Beef Loc Lac, but they’re not worth a visit if you’re planning to skip the lobster. Also note that Tan Cang’s aging strip mall location is adjacent to the perennially popular Chinese-Vietnamese-Cambodian Trieu Chau, so parking can become challenging at times.
