Sunright Tea Studio
High-quality fruit teas and dessert drinks from a multi-location chain that opens around lunchtime
We still remember our first visit to Sunright Tea Studio: The fairly large, somewhat industrial-looking space shares a parking lot with a paint store and roughly 10 other restaurants, felt clean and uncramped, and produced fruit teas that pop with flavor, and dessert drinks that feel appropriately decadent. Across other locations, which have tended to be smaller and more cramped, the experience is still otherwise the same.
Oreo Brulee Boba Milk is their most popular boba milk drink, and it’s obvious why: It’s like drinking a creme brulee dessert mixed with Oreo and tapioca balls. That drink paved the way for the Chocolate Oreo Frostie, which substitutes frozen chocolate milk for the creme brulee and boba, and amps up the Oreos. It takes all our willpower not to order one of these items each time we visit, instead opting for their healthier fruit teas – the signature Sunright mixes fresh orange juice, passionfruit, lemon and orange slices, while their mango and peach drinks are similarly mixes of real fruit and juice.
Sunright’s gimmick – signage that tells customers to “Shake 17 Times!” after receiving their drinks – still feels of its time, similar to exortations from Tiger Sugar and The Alley. It makes sense for a place that places a premium on handing over attractively unblended drinks: You get it at its prime, then do the mixing and the drinking.
Today, there are more Sunrights than ever – around 30 in California (five in Orange County alone) and another eight outside the state. But their hours still don’t make sense to us. Instead of catering to morning tea and coffee drinkers, the shop tends to open around noon, though in some locations starts at 11:00am or 11:30am. At some plazas, such as Irvine’s Diamond Jamboree, this means that what would be our first choice for tea routinely loses business to our second and third choices – and we routinely grouse that someplace so geographically close is frequently closed when we want it most.
If Sunright sees itself as primary a dessert shop, we could understand this, but as a “tea studio,” being open earlier would mean five times as many visits from us. Owing as much to its convenience as its quality, this is a tea shop we wish we could patronize more often.
