Sugar ‘n Spice – The Original Frozen Banana

Two competing Newport Beach stands offer their own versions of frozen bananas and Balboa Bars

Newport Beach’s Balboa Island is famous across Orange County for two things: Marine Avenue, home to many of its small shops and restaurants, and two competing frozen banana stands called Sugar ‘n Spice (“The Original Frozen Banana”) and Dad’s Donut & Bakery Shop. Although there’s a complicated history behind who invented and popularized the chocolate- and nut-covered frozen banana and its vanilla ice cream-cored cousin, the Balboa Bar, we love the versions served at Sugar ‘n Spice.

Frozen bananas and Balboa Bars are actually canvases: At Sugar ‘n Spice, they can be rolled or covered in a dozen different toppings, ranging from sprinkles to nuts, coconut, cereal, Oreos, Heath Bars, Reese’s peanut butter cups, salted caramel, s’mores, or peanut butter and jelly. Between the semi-soft fillings, the crispy chocolate shell, and any of these options, you’re guaranteed to have a great dessert.

If you have a serious problem with either bananas or vanilla ice cream, there are other options: Roughly a dozen scooped ice cream flavors and a couple of frozen cakes on sticks are offered. In our view, if you’re coming to this stand, stick with the chocolate-covered specialties.

Sugar ‘n Spice doesn’t attempt to match everything offered at Dad’s nearby: walk a few steps away and you’ll find banana toppings such as mint chip, cinnamon, honey almond granola, toasted coconut, and “butter brickle,” as well as donuts. Our recommendation after many years is not to choose between these places – try them both. There’s room in this world, and even a single small street on Balboa Island, for more than one great version of a classic recipe.
