Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at Disneyland
One of the biggest draws at Disney's Anaheim theme park is an immersive sci-fi experience
Opened in 2019 at the tail end of the third Star Wars trilogy, Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge offers Disneyland theme park guests the opportunity to explore an immersive experience based on the planet Batuu, including rides set inside the Millennium Falcon (Smuggler’s Run) and a First Order base (Rise of the Resistance). While connected to the rest of Disneyland, Galaxy’s Edge surrounds guests with themed greenery and buildings, and has multiple characters – major and otherwise – roaming the area in character, working together to preserve the illusion of full immersion.
Wait times for the stunning Rise of Resistance, which features multiple locations on foot and in moving vehicles, were historically among the longest at the park, in part because of frequent ride breakdowns. Five years after the ride opened, they appear to be more under control. Smuggler’s Run allows visitors to work on teams to fly the Millennium Falcon through a combat scenario, and while less exciting, is still worth a visit.
In addition to themed shops selling movie merchandise and props, including built-it-yourself custom lightsabers, Galaxy’s Edge includes several restaurants. The most unique, Oga’s Cantina, recalls the Creature Cantina scene from the first Star Wars film, and serves a variety of alien-looking snacks and drinks. Advance reservations can be made up to 60 days in advance, and are strongly recommended.
