Silverlake Ramen
Los Angeles-founded chain now offers mid ramen and tsukemen in three OC malls and plazas
There are many regions of the United States where Silverlake Ramen would stand out as a very good or great place to order either ramen or tsukemen. Orange County is not one of them.
Over the last five years, this LA-based chain has franchised beyond its original Silverlake neighborhood location to multiple states and three restaurants in Orange County: The first was in Huntington Beach – a city that may benefit most from its presence – followed by two more in Irvine, first at the Spectrum, followed by a new spot at the Crossroads Plaza, which opened in 2024 to replace J San Ramen.
We sampled three of the compact menu’s ramen and tsukemen options, as well as two appetizers, which were surprisingly more distinctive than the soups. “Crispy Broccolini” was a small but very fresh portion of hot broccolini stems and florets that mixed nicely with a warm, salad dressing-class sauce; a spicy chicken bun was overloaded with two pieces of karaage and minced meat and vegetables, a substantial protein portion that made up for what normally might be a second bun for the price.
Each of the ramen soups was a dull brown color, and substantially unremarkable apart from the reasonable portion sizes. Silverlake’s classic ramen had a lifeless broth, but plenty of chewy noodles, big pieces of submerged pork, and a half egg as stand-out elements; a special garlic truffle ramen offered more of the same but with modest truffle oil and garlic flavors mixed in. An awkwardly presented tsukemen arrived as a small bowl with two gigantic, overly fatty pieces of pork belly on top, followed by so many bean sprouts that we had to dig to get to the noodles. Once we sorted the bowl, the included pork gravy-like dipping sauce was strong, thick, and warm – perhaps the best element of the dish, next to the solid portion of noodles.
Attentive service at the Crossroads location was friendly but overwhelming for our group; it was very clear that the team cared a lot about taking care of customers, but were a little over-aggressive with frequent check-ins while we tried to eat. Mostly because of the fine rather than great flavors, we left without any desire to return, but would consider another visit if there is a major menu addition that re-piques our interest.
