Sawdust Art Festival

One of our very favorite local art events is held annually in Laguna Beach

A must-visit for art and jewelry lovers, the Sawdust Art Festival has been running since the mid-1960s in Laguna Beach. It straddles the line between “event” and “attraction” in the sense that it continuously occupies the same space, and is open for several months during the year, but otherwise remains closed to the public.

During the summer – from the end of June through the end of August – Sawdust operates an artists’ village with some of the most beautiful glass, craft, sculpture, and painted works you’ll find anywhere in the county, all available for purchase, as well as a small collection of restaurants and exhibitions (notably including live glass sculpting). As the name suggests, the pathways at the event are actually covered in sawdust and wood chips, so appropriately protective footwear is recommended.

For one month during the winter – late November through late December – Sawdust hosts Winter Fantasy, with more of a conspicuous Christmas theme, including sales of tree ornaments and gifts. Over 180 local artists participate, guaranteeing you’ll find something (probably a lot of things) worth bringing home.

The summer version of Sawdust is open all week; Winter Fantast is only Fridays through Sundays. Reasonably priced individual tickets and season passes are available.
