Poke Dot
A small poke shop delivers excellent value through high-quality fish and filling rice or salad bowls
Poke is as brilliant conceptually as it’s messy visually, taking everything great about sushi – except the painstaking presentation – and dumping it into a bowl at a far more affordable price. As Hawaiian as plate lunches and similarly assembled with scoops of ingredients, poke lets you mix and match your preferred fish, vegetables, rice, toppings, and sauces to create a filling yet potentially very healthy meal.
Located just across from John Wayne Airport in a plaza with several other good restaurants, Poke Dot specializes in several types of tuna, salmon, albacore, octopus, and small shrimp and scallops as proteins, with the choice of salad, white rice, brown rice, or chips as a base. You can add additional “mix” items for free, including imitation crab meat, avocado, cilantro, cucumber, jalapenos, and onion, then choose from eight sauces and 12 toppings to enhance the flavors and textures. Bluefin tuna and yellowtail can be added at additional costs, as well.
At Poke Dot, the results are never beautiful, but always delicious. You won’t confuse one of their poke bowls for Japanese chirashi – a similar concept, presented artistically – but you also won’t pay chirashi prices. Delivered in to-go containers, “bowls” with two fish scoops go for $15.45, three scoops for $16.95, and five scoops for $19.45. Those prices are up thanks to recent inflation, but fair values in the current economy, given the quality of ingredients here.
We’ve enjoyed our Poke Dot meals enough to repeatedly return even after trying many other poke places, and love that there’s a great dessert and drink shop (Paderia) so close by. While the seating and space are as no-frills as the poke packaging, Poke Dot is certainly worth visiting, especially for a quick lunch if you’re in the area.
