PhoHolic
Countless Orange County restaurants serve pho, yet this small chain stands out from the pack
We’d passed by the Rodeo 39 Public Market location of PhoHolic a half-dozen times in favor of other options inside Stanton’s must-visit food hall, and hadn’t stopped in: Most of Rodeo’s other, smaller restaurants offered dishes that were harder to find locally than Vietnamese pho soup.
Originally opened in 2015, PhoHolic started with one restaurant in Westminster and now operates several locations in Orange County, including a unique South Coast Plaza space with semi-private counter seating. Its Rodeo 39 space is outside the main hall, and quite large, including its own indoor and outdoor seating areas. These days, PhoHolic is regularly filling those tables, with long waiting lines for both pho and seats during peak hours, especially weekends.
That’s because its broth is excellent and rich with beef flavor – at least on par with and probably better than the more storied Pho 79’s. Their selection of 16 pho types offers ample if not particularly distinctive options: they’re all variant mixes of steak, brisket, tripe, meatballs, tendon, flank, oxtail, and shank. The meat portions and quality are reasonable for the prices, though the noodles aren’t as generously portioned as one might expect. There are no additional appetizers or other menu items besides drinks, so you won’t find egg rolls, spring rolls, or banh mi here, just pho.
Beyond the lack of other menu options, our experiences at the Stanton location have had no real follow up in service after pho and drinks are delivered. We’ve found ourselves still hungry after a bowl at Rodeo 39, at which point the choice is either to get back in line to place another pho order, or go somewhere else. (This could be solved with the ability to buy a noodle refill directly from your table.) Since the bowls are now nearly $15 each, that’s not a great experience, especially if you need a quick lunch, though there are admittedly worse places to “go find something else” than food halls with nice collections of restaurants.
In 2024, PhoHolic collaborated with its South Coast Plaza neighbor Paradise Dynasty for a limited-time set of Pho Xiaolongbao dumplings, which were beautifully green and white with PhoHolic beef broth and a meatball center inside. Compared with Paradise’s many wonderful pork dumplings, they weren’t particularly memorable until the included lime was squeezed on them, pho-ifying what otherwise tasted like plain beef dumplings. But the fact that this collaboration happened at all is a testament to the strength of PhoHolic’s brand, and a sign of good things to come for its future here.
