Pavilions

Originally from Garden Grove, this upscale version of Vons supermarkets has a full-service bakery

Founded in Garden Grove nearly 40 years ago, Pavilions was created as an upscale and more comprehensive version of Vons supermarkets, adding full-service pharmacies, butcher shops, and seafood counters, as well as wines and organic foods. Now owned by the Albertsons chain, Pavilions currently has nearly a dozen locations in Orange County, notably including several in Newport Beach.

The bakery is what really grabbed our attention at Pavilions: in addition to serving some of the most elaborate caramel apples we’ve seen outside of Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory locations, Pavilions also resells treats made by small local and national bakeries, including Los Angeles-based Duverger’s macarons and Mac Pops’ macaron pops.

We stopped by Pavilions to check out the macarons but wound up wanting to try almost everything else in their display cases – in part because the Duverger selection we came to explore turned out to be so modest. Although the Duverger flavors were muted and forgettable, a couple of Pavilions’ other chocolatey homemade baked goods proved quite good. This bakery remains on our list to try again when we have an appetite for desserts and happen to pass by.
