Overflo

A Buena Park Korean dessert shop that under-delivers on its significant potential

We were so excited to try The Source’s first ice cream shop Overflo – stylized “Overflo.” – when we spotted the menu inside: Unique flavors of soft serve, cream-filled pancakes, waffle and gelato pairings, and (unfortunately named) “Offle Waffles” – two flat waffle ice cream cones with a center of Nutella, Oreos, and/or Caramel. But our experiences here have been such train wrecks that we’ve never returned, and couldn’t recommend it to others.

On our first attempt to visit, the soft serve ice cream machine was broken, and on a second attempt, the machine was barely working, leaving a line of people waiting over 20 minutes for simple orders. Issues of various sorts – maintenance, cleanliness, and otherwise – have seemingly plagued the restaurant for years, and as we write this, it has been nearly empty every time we’ve recently passed by.

These waits might have been OK if Overflo’s desserts were great, but the Black Sea Salt and Thai Tea ice creams we selected had barely discernible flavors despite their striking looks. The oversized Offle Waffle had originally drawn us in, as it was heavily marketed in Overflo’s signage and its sole truly unique offering; unfortunately, it turned out to be really basic, tasting like Oreos and Nutella were stuffed inside a flattened ice cream cone. At some point, the restaurant stopped serving these waffles and began offering savory skillets with noodle and rice options, instead.

On paper, Overflo’s old ice cream and fresh waffle treat menu had so much potential. But execution is critically important, and in every way that mattered, this place underdelivered. We’re not interested in revisiting.
