Omomo Tea Shoppe
Known as much for long waits as cream-filled tea drinks, this small chain has a cult-like following
Repeat after us: There is no tea that’s worth waiting in line for an hour. There’s no tea worth waiting in an hour-long line. No tea is worth an hour’s wait.
If that repetition worked, you’re either going to save yourself some serious time waiting for tea at Omomo, or make it easier for the many people who disagree and continue to line up there. While we wouldn’t discourage you from enduring the wait once if you’re curious, we can say that across several visits to Omomo, we’ve never had any experience there – tea, service, or otherwise – that merited even half an hour of idle time.
Granted, their matcha, Thai tea, and Oreo drinks listed on their “specials” menu are all good, as is the seasonal “Itchy Peachy” peach version, which features gentle but pure peach purée. The trick is that they’re swirled with creme brulee puddings, creating irresistably creamy textures with dairy fat. Omomo’s more numerous “creamomo” drinks are topped with tiramisu or cheese foam for a similar effect, turning more basic fruit teas, milk teas, and cold cocoa into less healthy indulgences. In other words, this is a “tea shoppe,” but it’s really a dessert shop.
Strip the creams and brulees away, and what you’re left with at Omomo are common teas – think oolong, lemon, and watermelon green teas, as a few examples. That said, even though you can find these teas at hundreds of places, Omomo tends to prepare each of them very well, even without adding dairy thickeners. That partially explains the cult-like lines, as do Omomo’s prices: At under $6 a cup, versus around $7 for their specials, their drinks deliver better value than Starbucks in today’s inflated economy.
If you’re intrigued enough to visit, the small chain currently operates four locations: two Orange County shops across Irvine and Brea, one in Chino Hills (formerly known as Tancca, rebranded to Omomo in 2018), and one in San Diego. Omomo’s original Orange County shop in a different Irvine plaza recently closed over lease renewal terms, so it’s probably not a good idea to line up there – the wait may be even longer.
