Okbingsul
Unimpressive sweet and savory taiyaki are poster-worthy at this Buena Park dessert shop
When we say we love The Source, Buena Park’s heavily but not exclusively Korean shopping and restaurant collection, that’s an understatement: It’s one of our very favorite destinations in Orange County, and we’re happy just being there. So when we say we’re not fans of Okbingsul, a first-floor dessert shop there, realize that a place has to really disappoint us to interrupt our good vibes – and that’s the deal with this place.
We visited Okbingsul after seeing posters advertising their sweet and savory taiyaki – Japanese-style fish-shaped waffles cooked and filled with your choice of contents. “Filled” may be a strong word, though.
The sweet ones use either green tea, nutella, or red bean paste, and in our experience were uniformly underfilled and mostly batter. Savory ham and cheese taiyakis were each substantially loaded with mozzarella, but just bland.
Waffles, drinks, and eponymous Korean shaved ice bowls are also on the menu, but after checking around and seeing that our negative experience were consistent with others – over an extended period of time – we opted not to go in again.
