Founded in 1929 and housed in its current location since 1939, New York City’s Museum of Modern Art is one of the United States’ best curated art museums – and the country’s most popular as measured by number of annual visitors. Having played a major role in cementing Van Gogh’s and Picasso’s reputations, MoMA houses noteworthy works from both of those artists in addition to Basquiat, Chagall, Dali, Kahlo, Magritte, Matisse, Miro, Monet, O’Keeffe, and Warhol. Yet the now sprawling galleries devote considerable space to contemporary art across multiple media, including substantial immersive and interactive projects, as well as celebrations of design, photography, and architecture. Admission is ticketed; expect to spend four or more hours exploring on your first visit.
