If you’ve grown up in Orange County, you’ve almost certainly learned about and visited Mission San Juan Capistrano on a field trip – if not, consider this your invitation to check it out for yourself. Officially founded by the Spanish Roman Catholic priest Junipero Serra in 1776, this was the seventh of 21 missions established in California for the purposes of expanding Spain’s territory and bringing Christianity to those native to the area.
Though the mission declined significantly over the years due to earthquake damage, supply issues, and general neglect, it is maintained as a historical site with a functioning cathedral, outdoor event space, lilypad-covered fountain, and gift shop. It’s now across the street from a collection of small shops and nice restaurants, including Heritage Barbecue and Mayfield Restaurant & Market.
