Lunasia Dim Sum House

Just outside Orange County, enjoy stylish dim sum in an upscale dining room

All of Orange County’s major dim sum restaurants (China Garden, Seafood Cove, Seafood Paradise) offer similar enough choices that quality – and to some extent service – are the only reasons to prefer one over others. Located just outside of Orange County in Cerritos (with other locations in Torrance, Pasadena and Alhambra), Lunasia Dim Sum House is different: it’s noticeably but not overwhelmingly more upscale, offering a larger menu of Cantonese meats ranging from suckling pig to duck and BBQ, as well as varied seafood choices, such as sliced cold jellyfish.

While there aren’t any push carts, individual items made up for that omission with fancy presentation and ingredients. Sakura egg buns are swiped with rose gold, seafood dumplings come with black squid ink wrappers, and shrimp rolls are made from delicate rice threads. Though they’re less visually distinctive, the egg tarts and mixed pork puffs are also top-class here.

There are other impressive little touches if you know to look for them. Pineapple pork buns are more complex and savory than the more common pineapple-only versions served elsewhere, for example, and you’ll see ikura roe topping the seafood dumplings and caviar dotting the shumai. That having been said, their Shanghai-style pan-fried buns are a rare miss – blandly flavored and not particularly crispy on bottom.

Lunasia’s Cerritos location is just down South Street from a recently opened Sam Woo Cafe (in Artesia), which offers some of the dim sum thrills of Irvine’s old Sam Woo restaurant in a smaller, simpler environment. While Lunasia’s prices tend to be higher than Sam Woo’s, there are many more choices on this menu, plus a nicer dining room. We would love to see this chain open a location in Orange County.
