Los Angeles Zoo

An affordable, full-fledged zoo and botanical garden north of Orange County

Conceptually halfway between the Santa Ana Zoo and the San Diego Zoo, the Los Angeles Zoo offers a considerably more complete traditional zoo experience than anything currently available in Orange County, without the sprawl or theme park-class ambition of San Diego’s two facilities. First opened in 1966, the LA Zoo includes around 1,700 animals spread across 133 acres, plus a botanical garden with 800 different plant species. Multiple monkeys, big cats, koalas, meerkats, lemurs, and interesting antelopes are joined by a nice collection of birds, reptiles, and invertebrates.

Ticket prices are higher than the Santa Ana Zoo, but represent substantially better value for the dollar, and parking is free. Expect to spend several hours here, especially with kids.
