Long Beach Creamery

Two locations of this nice ice cream shop offer distinctive spins on classic American flavors

Just north of Orange County, and with one of two locations within easy walking distance of perennially excellent Middle Eastern/Mediterranean restaurant Ammatoli, Long Beach Creamery began as a pop-up in 2013 before evolving into full-fledged ice cream shops. The menu consists of around 20 ice cream flavors at any given time, some revolving, others consistent, plus waffle cones, butter cakes, and gluten-free brownies.

We tried and enjoyed a variety of uncommon flavors, including a Midnight Oolong with a distinct tea finish and chocolate start, Cabernet Brownie with a wine cream base and significant brownie swirls, and an excellent Honeycomb with small chunks of honeycomb crunch candy and larger swirls of golden honey. Blackring Coffee, made with coffee from a local roaster, was good but not as much of a standout as the others.

While virtually all of the flavors skew decidedly American, there’s a clear focus on giving each ice cream a standout note: other flavors including cashew fennel chip, burnt caramel, whiskey vanilla, peanut butter oatmeal cookie, and mint cookies and cream each have a small but welcome twist. Several sorbets, including pineapple whip and mango, and multiple flavors of butter cake cater to those who can’t or don’t want to deal with ice creams.

We liked everything we tried here enough that we’d consider visiting again when in the neighborhood. This is a nice home-grown ice cream shop for Long Beach residents, and more flavor options would only make it more compelling.
