Lady Wong Patisserie – NYC
In NYC, beautiful French-style pastries with Malaysian and Indonesian influences
One of the most impressive shops in New York City’s Singaporean hawker center Urban Hawker is Lady Wong Patisserie (aka Lady Wong Pastry and Cakes). As the second location of an East Village bakery that’s known as the city’s largest importer of pandan – used in layer cakes and pistachio-pandan royaltine cakes – Lady Wong sells Malaysian and Indonesian desserts in addition to French-style cakes and miniatures.
Although we were most excited to try those cakes, which are offered in a variety of compelling shapes, we were also glad to see kueh lapis layer pudding bars in their beautiful display cases. Signs at the Urban Hawker location also advertised savory puffs, ribs, and sticky rice dishes, which were not available on our visit.
Standouts included spiral matcha cake, a dynamite ube-blackberry sphere, mango sticky rice cake, and a black sesame-passion fruit dome cake, as well as nice coconut/pandan rainbow and rose pudding “cakes.” Lady Wong also ships many of its desserts nationally, and given the quality of the ones we tried, we wouldn’t be surprised to see the small chain keep on growing past its NYC locations.
