Karai Hand Roll Bar X Ramen

The latest evolution of Rodeo 39's glass-boxed ramen bar adds tasty sushi options to the menu

When HiroNori Craft Ramen’s sister restaurant Nandomo closed in 2023, the beautiful little glass-enclosed space inside Rodeo 39 Public Market remained prominent – and ready for another tenant. Thankfully, it became Karai Hand Roll Bar x Ramen, a Japanese-Korean restaurant that continues to offer a handful of noodle soups, now bolstered by a large collection of sushi options (and some very good fried karaage chicken).

As the name suggests, you could make an entire meal from hand rolls: several different sets are available in the $20 to $35 price range, graduating from tuna and salmon up to very fresh and tasty blue crab and lobster rolls, each also available a la carte. Yubu – sweet inari pockets stuffed with rice and either raw fish or bulgogi beef – are also available and particularly excellent here, either individually or as discounted add-ons to other meals. Two types of sashimi, salmon and yellowtail, are offered here in citrus soy sauce or vinegared oil as carpaccio plates.

Ramen broths include pork tonkotsu, spicy pork tonkotsu, chicken, Japanese spicy chicken, veggie, and Korean-style spicy buldak chicken ramen, each priced from $16 to $17. While the bowls of spicy pork and standard chicken ramen we ordered weren’t huge, and their broths weren’t memorably flavored, we really enjoyed their other ingredients, including thick slices of meat, hard-boiled eggs, and chewy, medium-thickness noodles.

The glass box seating remains a little confusing for first-time visitors. Ignore the kiosk outside – only for take-out orders – and have a seat at the counter, where you’ll get a free green salad with soy-wasabi dressing and a pitcher of cold water. Friendly, attentive service helps makes the experience worth repeating.
