Hue Kitchen

Fans of shrimp will find more to love in this Santa Ana central Vietnamese restaurant

Immediately next to Little Saigon in Santa Ana, construction was long underway in a small lot that once held central Vietnamese restaurant An Cuu Hue. After what felt like years, a mini-plaza emerged with multiple tenants, notably including the second local appearance of Vietnamese coffee giant Trung Ngyuen in a coffee shop, and a brand new central Vietnamese restaurant named Hue Kitchen.

Obviously fresh shrimp differentiates Hue Kitchen’s dishes from the non-trivial and growing number of central Vietnamese restaurants in Orange County. At many such places – Quan Mii and Quan Hy just to name a couple – shrimp are commonly minced up and cooked enough that they’re hard to tell from fresh and sometimes not obviously seafood. But at Hue Kitchen, you can taste their flavor in every bite across multiple dishes. It feels like a newcomer is just trying harder to stand out from well-established rivals.

Here, you can taste ground shrimp atop each of the little Banh Beo steamed rice dishes, caramelized shrimp on the Com Dap crispy rice, shrimp paste in the steamed banana leaf Banh Nam, and full shrimp in the tapioca cake Banh Loc. These items are now commonly available across Little Saigon restaurants, and generally delicious. Yet having them here feels like experiencing the dishes for the first time, with flavor notes that should have been there all along.

Hue Kitchen’s soups – Bun Bo Hue, Bun Cha, and Banh Canh – are all delicious, too. The former An Cuu Hue was known for its Bun Bo Bue, so if some old article on the location leads you to this address, you can order with confidence and not be disappointed. Everything we’ve tried here has been very good, and we’ve returned with plans to do so again.
