Honeymee
Milk and honey, honey and milk, on repeat since 2014
Honeymee’s simplicity is at once its greatest appeal and its deepest shortcoming. Upon discovering a menu that was little more than “true milk ice cream” drizzled with “natural raw honey,” chocolate/and or coffee, our first reaction was “that’s it?” – no additional ice cream flavors and limited topping options didn’t pull us back for another visit… Until it did, once, as the idea of enjoying these relatively pure flavors without adulteration somehow felt like enough. As of 2024, the small L.A.-based chain has apparently spent a decade betting on the craving for milk and honey to be more than a one-in-a-while thing.
Today, Honeymee’s menu includes 15 milkshakes, several iced teas, and a few hot teas, plus a wider variety of fruit toppings such as yuzu, passion fruit, strawberry, and grape. Icy cold yet smooth, the milk soft serve remains more of a statement and contrast with other ice cream purveyors than a great choice, but allows other flavors such as honey and strong matcha to pop.
We enjoyed the Matcha Affogato, a swirl of soft serve with alternating drizzles of honey and matcha on the outside, and a surprisingly considerable liquid core of matcha tea waiting inside. Similarly, a brown sugar boba milk drink works as much because of the other flavors as the neutral milk.
If you’re up for a frozen treat that’s intentionally minimalist and twee, this would be a great place to start. There are currently two locations in Orange County – Irvine and Buena Park.
