A rapidly expanding Yemeni coffee chain plans 2025 openings in Anaheim and Tustin
In recent years, one of the most notable trends in the coffee world has been the rapid expansion of Yemeni cafe chains, featuring strong coffees and Adeni teas sourced from Yemen. Orange County already has two national chains – locations of Qamaria Coffee in Fullerton and Sana’a Cafe in Lake Forest – plus the independently owned Qahwah & Chapati in Anaheim. They’ll soon be joined by Haraz Coffee House, which was founded in Michigan back in 2021, and has announced Anaheim and Tustin locations amongst over 130 new shops planned for the United States.
We visited the San Francisco location of Haraz in 2025. While the beverage and food offerings are extremely similar to Qamaria’s, there were a few noteworthy differences: Although some coffees and teas are available in medium or large pots, we didn’t see any Qamaria-style fancy gold serviceware at Haraz, which largely appeared to be focused on single-portion drinks. The 16-ounce saffron latte we ordered was served in a large mug, sweetened with honey, and attractively finished with a foamy milk drizzle; an iced pistachio latte had plenty of nutty flavor and no foam.
While Haraz’s printed menu listed cheesecakes such as “Istanbul” and biscoff, leading us to ask about the former, our server explained that the menu was national and not specific to what they actually sold locally – there was no Istanbul option available. We wound up ordering a Dubai chocolate cake, which was suggested to be a cheesecake but actually just two layers of fluffy chocolate cake surrounding a knafeh/pistachio filling, not the best riff on the trendy Dubai dessert. A pistachio baklava finger was tiny and quite sweet but tasty. Haraz’s display case also included fine-looking milk cakes, croissants, and other pastries including honeycomb/cream cheese cake (here called “bee bites”), plus a handful of savory items.
We’re looking forward to Haraz’s openings in Anaheim and Tustin, and will update this article when we’ve had the chance to visit at least one Orange County location.
