Forn al Hara Bakery

One of Little Arabia's top destinations for Middle Eastern flatbreads

In Anaheim’s Little Arabia, multiple bakeries specialize in Middle Eastern flatbreads – manaeesh – effectively large pitas topped with meats, cheeses, and/or vegetables that are commonly mixed with regional spices and olive oil. The easiest analogy is “pizza,” and there are surely similarities, but in the absence of mandates to make the flatbread stiff, add tomato sauce, or include cheese, manaeesh can bear some, little, or no more resemblance to pizza compared with any pita.

At Forn al Hara Bakery, manaeesh are served either in large or mini portions, the former ranging from under $5 to $9, the latter $2.50 each or a half dozen for $9 to $12. These size options give you the opportunity to order a bunch of different flavors to sample, as we did with toppings including Muhamara (red pepper dip), Zaatar, spiced ground beef, cheese, and honey. (They also offer wraps and traditional pizzas if you want them.)

We’d strongly advise you to canvas multiple flatbreads on your first visit, as it practically guarantees you’ll want to return for a second and a third time. Ordered from a counter, the manaeesh come fresh out of the oven to your table, spotlighting the spicy sujuk sausage or pooling cheese in a “cheese boat” shape with your choice of parsley, chili, or zaatar. The flavors here are universally excellent.

Should you order too few manaeesh, desserts including baklava, mamol cookies, knafeh, and namora are available. We haven’t yet had the opportunity to try them, because we loved the savory items enough to fill up. As much as we enjoy the manaeesh at nearby Al Amir Bakery, we’ll be back to try more at Forn al Hara, for sure.
