Famous Foods Street Eats – Las Vegas
In Las Vegas, an ambitious food hall takes inspiration from Singaporean hawker centers
Paralleling the East Coast opening of Urban Hawker, a New York City food hall inspired by Singaporean hawker centers, Singaporean nightlife and lifestyle company Zouk Group drew upon similar inspirations to open Famous Foods Street Eats inside Resorts World Las Vegas. The 24,000-square foot food hall assembles significant restaurants from across Asia and the United States in a common area, and originally boasted that it had gathered a record number of Michelin Guide-cited concepts in one place; several years later, that appears to no longer be true.
The Michelin-recognized restaurants currently in the space are An Chun Shandong Dumpling and Geylang Claypot Rice. Other vendors include Googgle Man Char Kuey Teow, Wu Zhang Artisan Noodles, Fuhu Cha Chaan Teng teahouse and dim sum cafe, Blood Bros. barbecue, Tiger Sugar, Michos Tacos, Streetbird by Marcus Samuelsson, and Steve Aoki’s teriyaki bowl Kuru Kuru Pa.
Despite the ambition required to bring Singaporean and other Southeast Asian vendor into the space, this food hall didn’t have the feel or the foot traffic of a hawker center when we visited. Moreover, some of the vendors appeared to be either in the process of closing or already closed. It appears as if Asian restaurants including Boon Tong Kee, Ten Suns Beef Soup, and Pepita’s Kitchen, have been replaced with the Famous Eats-operated Burger Barn and Sweet Eats (Instagrammable treats), as well as basic concepts such as Salad Jack’s salad bar and Han’s Fish & Chips, which serves UK-style deep-fried fish and fries.
Famous Eats is a spectacle due to the considerable resources invested in its design and infrastructure. The location at Resorts World – somewhat isolated from heavier foot traffic elsewhere on the Las Vegas Strip, and dependent on either food tourists or hotel guests to survive – is perhaps its biggest challenge looking forward.
