Erewhon Market
Like Whole Foods, but smaller and more exclusive
Whole Foods, but 75% smaller and 500% more exclusive – that’s Erewhon Market in a nutshell. Founded as a health food store in Boston nearly 60 years ago, later relocated to California and reimagined, the modern Erewhon began its ascent into a thriving 10-store chain under new ownership in 2011. As of today, all of Erewhon’s stores are in Los Angeles County, and it’s surprising there isn’t yet an OC location.
Despite its long history, Erewhon remained under the mainstream radar until social media caught on to its smoothies, hyped in recent years by celebrities including Hailey Bieber, Olivia Rodrigo, and Sabrina Carpenter. These healthy, nearly $20 drinks – which aren’t necessarily guaranteed to taste great – are only a fraction of the brand’s aspirational appeal. Like Gelson’s and Bristol Farms, Erewhon stores sell fresh juices, baked goods, and ready-to-eat meals, here with beautiful presentation, an inescapable emphasis on “organic” branding, and price tags that are only understandable as deliberately exclusive. Even produce sells at a 200% markup, guaranteeing that the chain’s well-heeled customers can enjoy a less crowded shopping experience despite sometimes narrow aisles.
From immune system-boosting bottled “shots” to heaps of organic salad and “no sugar added” organic sushi bar, it’s easy to imagine Erewhon finding an audience in Orange County – though the brief tenure of Bristol Farms’ Newfound Market at the Irvine Spectrum Center suggests that choosing the right location and size for a high-end food market will be more difficult than finding a vacant space in a shopping mall. We’ll update this article if and when Erewhon becomes available here; until then, the closest LA County store is at The Grove.
