Eat’s Sushi

Orange County's closest thing to a "sweet spot" for a la carte sushi quality and pricing is in Costa Mesa

Orange County has an astounding number of sushi options, historically spanning low to high price points, ultra-traditional to California-style recipes, and every service style from omakase and all you can eat to conveyor belt service and pure a la carte. There’s no single, one-size-fits-all sweet spot, but Eat’s Sushi in Costa Mesa is at the center of all these options: mid-priced, largely Japanese with some American influences, and a la carte ordering of omakase-quality fresh items.

Despite inflation’s significant impacts on all restaurants, Eat’s balance of quality and pricing remains impressive, and there are some standout items on the menu: excellent Japanese-peppered tuna and salmon, a similarly superb Fire Island roll (shrimp, two tunas, onion and jalapeño), and “new style sashimi” taking after Nobu classics. Yellowtail with yuzu, ponzu, and jalapeño, jumbo scallops, and Japanese snapper (madai) all arrive in a thin pool of sauce so you needn’t worry about dipping in soy or wasabi yourself.

Across several visits, we’ve sampled quite a bit of the menu, including thick pieces of sashimi, a genuinely spicy tuna hand roll, and many individually excellent nigiri pieces: the pepper tuna and salmon continue to be standouts. Individual kitchen-prepared small plates range from $2.50 to $12, with specialty rolls at $6.50 to $8.50, though many are kept “affordable” by cutting the number of pieces from 8 or 6 to 5 or 4. With rare exceptions, including a “cucumber wrap” that took a while to show up and came out watery, pretty much everything is very good, and while the prices aren’t cheap or expensive, you’re paying for solid quality and thicker cuts of fish.

Friendly, attentive service combined with consistently very good fish quality and prices that won’t break the bank have guaranteed that we’ll return. Note that Eat’s took over Costa Mesa’s Takumi Sushi in mid-2024, and is now operating it as a second location; we haven’t yet had the opportunity to check it out for ourselves.
