Dad’s Donut Shop & Bakery – The Original Balboa Bar and Frozen Banana
Two rival Newport Beach stands offer frozen bananas and Balboa Bars - this one has donuts, too
Newport Beach’s Balboa Island is famous across Orange County for two things: Marine Avenue, home to many of its small shops and restaurants, and two competing frozen banana stands called Sugar ‘n Spice and Dad’s Donut & Bakery Shop (“the Original Balboa Bar and Frozen Banana”). Although there’s a complicated history behind who actually invented and popularized the chocolate- and nut-covered frozen banana and its vanilla ice cream-cored cousin, we have really enjoyed treats at both places, which are only several doors down from one another.
Frozen bananas and Balboa Bars are actually canvases: At Dad’s, they can be rolled in your choice of 10 different toppings including sprinkles, almonds, Oreos, toasted coconut, mint chips, cinnamon, honey almond granola, butter brickle, or mint chips. Small, medium, large, and extra-large banana sizes are available at slightly different prices. Between the semi-soft fillings, the crispy chocolate shell, and any toppings you pick, you’re guaranteed to have a great dessert.
Unlike Sugar ‘n Spice, Dad’s doesn’t offer sauces such as caramel, marshmallow s’mores, or peanut butter and jelly – its toppings are all dry. But you can mix them individually or in an “everything mix,” as well as doing the same to a piece of frozen cheese cake on a stick, if you’re not a fan of bananas or ice cream. This shop also includes scoop-ready Dreyers ice cream flavors and a small collection of donuts, as well as limited drinks.
Our recommendation after many years is not to choose between these places – try them both. There’s room in this world, and even a single small street on Balboa Island, for more than one great version of a classic recipe.
