Chaupain French Bakery
A bakery with shops in two OC cities and 16 different farmers markets across Southern California
Originally started as a stand at a farmers market in Bakersfield, selling baked goods from a table, Chaupain Bakery opened in its own Laguna Hills space starting in 2018 – complete with the white brick facades and industrial pipe shelves that were all the rage back then. Today, Chaupain continues to operate from both types of locations, including a newer San Clemente store, and 16 different farmers markets, including a stand-out booth at the Orange County Great Park Farmers Market. The brick-and-mortar stores offer breakfast foods, quiches, soups, salads, and sandwiches in addition to pastries and bread; their market stands are just pastries and bread.
On our visits, we’ve fallen in love with their croissants, as well as their fruit danishes, tarts, and bread, all of which are beautiful and delicate – maximally appealing visually so as to win people over when they’re walking around crowded markets full of choices. The stands tend to be covered with mesh screens so that customers can peruse their cornucopia-like offerings, but flies can’t get in or near the food. Our advice is to go with whatever looks good at Chaupain, knowing that it’s going to be pretty fresh and quite delicious.
