Carrot & Daikon Banh Mi
In Little Saigon, a growing chain of Vietnamese banh mi sandwich restaurants with premium ingredients
When we visited Carrot & Daikon Banh Mi, there was only a single location – in Garden Grove – and today there are three in Little Saigon alone, with a fourth opening soon in Huntington Beach (in partnership with Whip Dessert Cafe). As the name suggests, the chain primarily focuses on Vietnamese banh mi sandwiches, which are often stuffed with shredded carrots and daikon radishes.
We haven’t done a super deep dive on their small menu. Lured in by hype for the banh mi heo quay — a version of the sandwich with crispy pork belly – we tried both that and the classic (dac biet) cold cut sandwich. Though we’re banh mi fans and always open to finding new places and versions to try, neither was really amazing when we tried them, just competent; the meats, carrots, daikon, jalapenos, cilantro and baguettes were all on par with THH’s ingredients, though better than Lee’s Sandwiches.
We weren’t huge fans of the restaurant experience, which was set up as a drive-through with a takeout window at the former site of a Taco Bell. Entering the line of cars waiting for sandwiches can be hard to navigate, and when we stopped by, substantial numbers of menu items were crossed out as unavailable.
Though it hasn’t been a high priority for us to return, we are planning to revisit in the future to sample more. Although we’re not breakfast sandwich people, their three egg options are somewhat unique locally, and they have a couple of other deluxe ingredient options (lomo saltado and fish cake) that could be fun to try as well.
