California African American Museum (CAAM)

An expansive, free exhibition of African American history with rotating contemporary art collections

So closely neighboring the California Science Center and Natural History Museum of LA County that they share a parking lot (with a single, all-day parking fee), the California African American Museum is less than an hour away from Orange County in downtown Los Angeles – and fantastic. The single-story building hosts multiple exhibitions at once, on our most recent visit featuring a lobby-scale gallery of Tatyana Fazlalizadeh portraits; an exploration of George Washington Carver’s scientific, artistic, and broader educational achievements; an incredible collection of three-dimensional and multimedia works by Simone Leigh; a historic discussion of Black struggles and triumphs in rural California; plus an Afrokosmic multimedia exhibit by Ben Campbell, and an outdoor sundial by Chloë Bass featuring solar panels.

Geared towards adult audiences, CAAM is absolutely worth an hour or two of exploration, and admission is free.
