Buenos Migos
For a hot minute, Rodeo 39's Mexican-Asian fusion restaurant offered good street tacos and OK churros
Any new Rodeo 39 Public Market opening is guaranteed to get our attention, so we were immediately intrigued when we saw that Buenos Migos was opening at the Stanton food hall sporting a distinctive neon sign and logo. Pitching itself as a fusion of Mexican and Asian influences, the new restaurant used social media to show off appealing photos of tacos and ube drinks/desserts, so we went to try them ourselves; we were pleased by the quality of the former, but less by the latter.
Offered in birria, hot chicken, and spicy fish versions, the tacos impressively balanced meats, vegetables, and cheeses in flavors and aesthetics. It was clear that each “street taco” clearly received more individual attention than most tacos served from street carts, and rivaled some of the best premium alternatives we’d enjoyed in recent times.
Unfortunately, Buenos Migos’ dessert game wasn’t as strong. Despite being carried and consumed only feet away from the restaurant’s front counter, the ube churros they served were only slightly warm and nowhere near as exciting as they looked in photos – syrup had already soaked into the chewy fried dough, making the flavor harder to detect than the color. Moreover, their ube horchata was basically just a purple-colored horchata.
Buenos Migos amped up its promotion of items it could make with prior ingredients, including “bulgogi birria Mexican pizzas” made with tortillas, and alternative churro flavors, before closing in 2023.
