Blue Bowl Superfoods
Originally founded in Orange, this acai bowl chain is expanding throughout Southern California
Following successful pop-ups at local farmers’ markets and Kaiser Permanente facilities, Blue Bowl Superfoods opened its first brick-and-mortar location in the City of Orange back in 2016, and as of early 2025 has six Orange County shops plus others spread across three Southern California counties. From Costa Mesa to Irvine, Huntington Beach, Orange, and Stanton, the Blue Bowl formula is the same: pay a flat price ($11-15) for one of three bowl sizes (12/16/24 oz.) filled with frozen, chilled, and/or room temperature fruits and toppings, then select the healthy-ish ingredients that appeal to your palate.
We say “healthy-ish” because it’s entirely possible to choose super fatty almond, cashew, or peanut butter, semi-fatty coconut or mango bits, and get carby with chocolate chia seeds or maple quinoa. But you can also stay in the superfoods lane by going with layers of “base” ingredients such as acai and pitaya, fresh fruits including strawberries and blueberries, plus toppings from goji berries and mulberries to dried peaches and diced dates. Powders ranging from espresso, matcha, and cacao to cinnamon and raspberry can further punch up the flavors, while sweeteners made with agave, apples, dates, and ginger replace traditional simple syrups and honeys. The result is typically packed with flavor and color, the latter most obvious in the base layers when the clear bowls are viewed from the side.
On our visits to the Costa Mesa and Irvine locations, we’ve tried everything from fruit-heavy bowls layering acai, pitaya, blue coconut, and mango passion fruit sorbet-style ices to cold brew coffee, matcha, and blue chia pudding combinations approximating a Hong Kong-style yuanyang drink. Blue Bowl’s concoctions have been consistently fresh, appropriately flavored and textured across every ingredient, and – sometimes surprisingly – just light enough to make a 16-ounce treat feel guilt-free. Granted, we’ve generally skipped the highest fat and caloric ingredients, and stuck with base sizes, but we haven’t felt like we’re doing damage in the same way as we would with several scoops of ice cream and toppings.
Blue Bowl isn’t the only local source of acai bowls: Boba drink specialist Leaf N Cream offers similar ingredient options and prices with at least equally impressive plating, and restaurants such as Toast Kitchen + Bakery will turn a basic acai bowl into art for a higher price. But we appreciate Blue Bowl’s focus on great-tasting and largely healthy options; we’ve visited multiple times and will return again in the future.
