Belacan Grill Malaysian Bistro
Tustin's Malaysian restaurant offers numerous authentic and semi-authentic options
While many Asian cultures have plenty of representation in the Orange County food scene, Malaysian cuisine is fairly underrepresented – Tustin’s Belacan Grill is an exception in several ways. It offers an impressively large menu and a more upscale setting than one might expect before arriving, providing those unfamiliar with Malay food a very comfortable setting for their first experiences with the flavors, which fuse elements of Thai, Indian, and Chinese cuisines. There are enough options to make multiple visits mandatory for a full assessment, even if one leaves out some of the less authentically Malaysian dishes and sticks to the classics.
In our decidedly non-comprehensive visit, we generally found the dishes to be fair approximations of favorites from Malaysia and Singapore, including competent satays and curries. But the Mamak Mee Goreng, a variant on a long-time favorite from the region featuring fried egg noodles with chicken, shrimp, and vegetables, was underwhelming – less curried and spicy than sweet and tangy. We’d consider returning, but after several years, still haven’t yet found inspiration to do so.
