Bazaar Meat – Chicago

The best dining room in the current Bazaar family, with a locally attenuated menu

Occupying part of the second floor of Bank of America’s building in the River North district, Chicago’s version of Bazaar Meat is substantially similar in concept to the Las Vegas location, but very different in execution. The premise, again, is to adapt chef José Andrés’ elevated, avant garde take on American and Spanish dining for a more meat-and-potatoes audience, trimming the magic tricks somewhat in favor of more steak options.

In Chicago, there are fewer beef selections, some of the seafood choices have shifted to the first-floor Bar Mar, and the dining room is decidedly lighter and brighter than the dark, casino-adjacent Las Vegas Bazaar Meat. While we’ll always carry a torch for the incredibly designed Beverly Hills and South Beach Bazaars, Chicago’s Bazaar Meat currently has the chain’s best overall environment, even considering the attractive (but frenetic) NYC location and Vegas’s second Bazaar, the recently opened Bazaar Mar.

You can enjoy a beautiful view of Chicago’s architecture while enjoying Bazaar classics including Japanese baby peaches, coffee-rubbed steak with passionfruit a la Bazaar South Beach, and a particularly nutty cotton candy foie gras. Eight- to 10-year old Vaca Vieja steaks, José’s tacos (caviar, jamón ibérico, nori), and Spanish octopus are joined by miso caramel popcorn, Buffalo-style bison carpaccio, and foie gras canale torchons.

Dessert options range from cookies and mini-cake bites to frozen, cream-filled donuts that are surprisingly impressive in flavor, yet easier to serve than some other Bazaar desserts. Great service is another highlight.
