Da Vien Coffee
Vietnamese egg coffee specialists have also mastered hybrid tea-coffee drinks
Vietnamese egg coffee went from obscure to widely available locally within a relatively short period of time, turning the unique topping – condensed milk beaten into a meringue with egg yolk – into a desireable alternative to salty Taiwanese cheese foams and heavy creme brulees found elsewhere. With two Little Saigon locations, one in Westminster (opened 2021) and one in Garden Grove (2023), Da Vien quickly established itself as a top destination for egg coffees, teas, and hybrids, while offering a small collection of breakfasty-dessert items alongside them.
The big draws here are the standard egg coffee and two variations: a Matcha Foam Coffee that magically floats bright green matcha on top of Vietnamese coffee, and Ube Coffee, which mixes the purple-hued root with foam above a coffee base. Salted and coconut coffee versions, lattes, and marble, black, and traditional cafe sua da coffees are also available. Hot toast pieces topped with ice cream, such as the matcha toast shown here, were only OK and have disappeared from the menu; Korean-style bingsoo shaved ice topped with fruit, cream, and sometimes flan has replaced it.
What has brought us back repeatedly is the surprising combination of coffee and matcha, which when layered in separate textures somehow manage to work together distinctly, yet in perfect harmony – a feat we thought was Impossible, even after trying Hong Kong-style Yuantang tea. Other limited time and/or experimental drinks, such as Da Vien’s caramel matcha latte, have lured us back in, but proved more distinctive in concept and looks than texture or flavor.
Our single ongoing issue with Da Vien is common to Vietnamese coffee shops: Its regular and “large” drinks have a lot of ice in each cup, which feels off given their $6-7 prices – an issue some places have blamed on the high caffeine levels of Vietnamese coffees (which doesn’t explain the same ice levels in teas). Regardless, expect to spend longer waiting for your drink to be made than actually consuming it. Given how wonderful they taste, we’ve taken to using spoons to keep enjoying those egg foam-covered ice cubes afterwards, extending an experience that could stand to be longer from the start.
