Playa Mesa
A beautiful space in Costa Mesa to enjoy fresh, upscale tacos and Mexican cocktails
It’s obvious from multiple meals at Playa Mesa that this Mexican restaurant was very deliberately designed to find a middle ground between authentic inexpensive taquerias and higher-end elevated Mexican and Mexican-American restaurants – while catering, as its founders once said, to parents who want to enjoy margaritas while their kids eat tacos.
Given the prominence of its beautiful, well-stocked bar, it’s clear that one can’t fully appreciate Playa Mesa without diving into their Mexican cocktails. That said, even dry customers will appreciate the restaurant’s consistently very good food, excellent environment, and friendly service. Playa Mesa produces pretty much everything important from scratch, resulting in fresh-tasting tortillas, aguachiles and ceviches, aguas frescas and horchatas.
Like Puesto, the menu highlights here are upscale tacos, which have ranged from solid to very good on the occasions we’ve visited. Thanks to (sometimes) premium ingredients, including shrimp, salmon, and octopus, Playa Mesa’s standard taco prices range from $14 to $21 for a pair of two. On Taco Tuesdays, you can sample seven of their less expensive tacos for $4 to $6 each, or shrimp for $7, making this the ideal time for a first visit – and perhaps subsequent ones. Other entrees we’ve tried here have been good, but not as memorable as the tacos.
