Himalayan Delights
Newport Beach gets a substantially Indian menu with fair versions of Nepalese classics
A large menu packed with a non-trivial number of Himalayan dishes and plenty of Indian options. Friendly service. An open-air dining room near the waterfront. What’s not to like?
Starting with the better items, it’s hard to go wrong with the chicken momo dumplings, which were plump, tender, and typically mild – an easy introduction to Nepalese/Himalayan cuisine for the unfamiliar. We were also generally pleased by Himalayan Delights’ tender, tandoor-cooked lamb chops (bhera ko karang), crispy bright red shrimp pakora, and semi-spicy chicken kadai. Though we’d describe them all as tasting somewhere between “fine” and “good” – none memorable or up to the best levels of Himalayan food we’ve had elsewhere – they all made for nice photographs.
By comparison, separate coconut and peanut-cherry badami naans were only okay, a surprise as these flatbreads are commonly sweet and punchy enough for people to fight over the last slices. We tried to punch up the heat level a little by ordering a side cup of “911 sauce,” but found it to be purely oily, tingle-inducing spice without much underlying flavor.
Let’s be honest: Newport Beach isn’t Orange County’s most diverse place – by culinary or other measures – so it’s not exactly a shock that Himalayan Delights is, by simply existing, the city’s best Himalayan/Nepalese restaurant. And even by broader local standards, where this particular version of Indian cuisine isn’t super common, this is a good enough place to become familiar with some of the classics.
That having been said, as long-time fans of Nepalese food, we wouldn’t rush back. Our hope is that Himalayan Delights keeps evolving and pushing the local flavor envelope over time, as it would be great for this unique and special cuisine to have some legitimately excellent local representation.
