Devil & Angel Desserts
This LA-based chain offers trendy sweets, sugary drinks, and Korean corn dogs at a single OC location
North of Orange County but close enough for a fairly easy drive, Torrance’s Del Amo Fashion Center is home to a particularly nice Mitsuwa supermarket and one of the largest collections of cute Asian boutiques we’ve seen in any Southern California shopping mall. That’s where we first spotted Devil & Angel Desserts, a Korean sweet shop offering everything from sugar-glazed tanghulu fruit skewers and Korean corn dogs to extra-large boba/jelly drinks and Dubai chocolate strawberry cups. Although we skipped Devil & Angel’s Torrance location, we regretted doing so, so when we discovered Orange County’s only location at The Outlets at Orange, we beelined to the front counter.
Although the Dubai chocolate strawberry cup was outrageously expensive – $17 – it was in line with the crazy prices other places have been charging for the pistachio, knafeh, and chocolate candy bar sensation; the difference here was that Devil & Angel’s version doesn’t taste particularly good. While there was no shortage of nice enough sliced strawberries, their fruitiness overpowered the modest quantities of milk chocolate and not especially delicious pistachio sauce, resulting in an all but forgettable tasting experience. A Triple Belgium Chocolate cup was just strawberries with chocolate, and still pricey at $14, but the classic flavors worked better together.
We picked only one of the colorful drinks from the “Refresher” selection: Blue Lagoon, described as lemonade with pureed lychees, kumquat, blue curacao, and lychee jelly, plus a lemon slice. Offered either in 24- or 32-ounce cups ($6.75/$7.25), these drinks (milk teas, smoothies, and sparkling “ades”) are much better values than the strawberry cups, but the Blue Lagoon’s sweetness level was so high and its fruit flavors so obscured that we could barely register anything but sugar and chewy bits while drinking it.
With over a dozen Devil & Angel locations spread across California, Idaho, Utah, and Texas, there’s no doubt that this LA-based chain is using great graphic design and popular treats to visually entice customers – and we’re glad we gave them a try. That said, we didn’t like any of the items we ordered enough to feel great about how much we paid for them, and wouldn’t return again unless something major changes in the future.
