Mochill Donuts & Coffee
The sole Orange County location of a San Francisco-based chain of mochi donut and drink shops
As a smaller and somewhat overlapping sibling to Ren Matcha & Mochi, Mochill Donuts & Coffee initially appears to be heavily focused on its own specialty, mochi donuts, but also turns out to have a significant collection of drinks and soft serve ice cream treats similar to Ren’s. Founded in San Francisco, Mochill now has one Orange County location – inside Irvine’s Mitsuwa supermarket – with a smaller version of its standard menu, which normally includes French puffs, cronuts, mochi malasadas, and brioche buns that aren’t available here. Hawaiian coffee is also available.
Large display windows at the Irvine location show off at least a dozen different mochi donut flavors, ranging from basics (cinnamon sugar, cookies’n cream, fruity pebbles, strawberry) to Japanese classics (matcha, black sesame, milk tea) and seasonal options (blue snow flakes, dark chocolate peppermint). While the donuts all use the same regrettably bland mochi base, their glazes are full of flavor, and you can order them hot and freshly made if you’re willing to wait 5-10 minutes for your order.
Like Ren, Mochill offers flavored mont blanc-topped soft serve, notably using Hokkaido milk ice cream across the board with flavored (matcha, mango, strawberry, cream cheese, chocolate) mont blanc pastes, as well as sauced soft serve cups, floats, parfaits, and shakes ranging in price from around $6 to $15, with most in the $7 to $9 range. We enjoyed these treats at least as much as the donuts: a honey black sesame matcha perfectly layered the two flavors in an icy cup (hot is also available), while a melon float combined strong Japanese melon-flavored soda with a dollop of really good ice cream. While the donuts are Mochill’s most obvious draw, we’d return first for these treats, instead.
